Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Coulee 20 is a great pack!I own several Mystery Ranch packs - I love all of them. I purchased the Coulee 20 for myself and two children - we all own the Coulee 32 and use the pack for hiking and climbing. We wanted to get a slightly smaller pack for shorter routes or missions that required less equipment. We have since used the Coulee 20 for a climb of the Half Dome Cables Route in Yosemite National Park and just this last weekend to climb Castle and Conundrum Peaks (Fourteeners near Aspen, CO). The pack performed perfectly, and I will be using it on many more adventures. It is light, comfortable, and able to fit all the necessary equipment for many types of hikes and climbs. Highly recommended!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excited to see this in a smaller daypack sizeReally excited to see M.R. release this in a smaller daypack size as I was in the market for something new. I rarely need over 20L for long hikes and this checked most of the boxes.Pros:- Material quality is what you'd expect from M.R.- Zippers feel great and are very smooth- Stuff pockets and compression buckles are thoughtfully designed, might even use this for bootpacks at ski resorts- Harness and yoke system is super comfy- Features are great like the water bottle pockets and trekking pole attachmentsNitpicks:- Nowhere to leash keys (knew this before purchasing)- Some of the straps are hard to pull and don't tighten smoothly, hoping they break in over timeCons:- Price (whew buddy its gettin' expensive)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Blends features of a hiking and military packI am very happy with this as an EDC pack. It blends the features of a hiking and military pack into one. It is everything I wish the Mystery Ranch (MR) Urban Assault 21L and MR Urban 24L should have been. It fulfills my requirements beautifully! I also have some nitpicking complaints to make it better. 1. Full suspension to carry heavy loads. A. Adjustable torso. It adjusts the height of the hip belt to your torso length. An adjustable torso is also useful when the hip belt is folded back or removed. It will position your pack right above the buttocks, which is the most comfortable for carry. B. Rigid yolk. My first time trying this type of yolk. The rigid yolk seems to keep the pack more secure to your back and the shoulder straps don't dig into the shoulders and chest. C. Padded hip belt. Nicely padded hip belt with pockets. I fold back my hip belt and loop it through the ice axe loops. It keeps it secure and out of the way until I need it for heavy loads. The pockets on the hip belt are also nice, but you can't use the pockets when you fold the hip-belt back. D. Padded shoulder straps. They are nicely contoured and padded. The sternum straps are low profile and easily adjustable. Overall, very happy with a full suspension on this smaller-size pack. This type of suspension is typically found on MR packs larger than 30L. Some people would say it is overkill. but if you carry lots of water and electronics you will be thankful. 2. Compressible and expandable storage space. A. Large main compartment. It has a hydration pouch, latching points for MR Quick attach zoid bag. A large compartment gives you flexibility on what to pack. I did purchase the MR Quick attach zoid bag to keep my epi-pen, rescue inhaler, and other useful items for easy visibility and accessibility. B. Expandable outer pockets and external water bottle pockets. Side compression straps can also be used to strap large items like tripods.3. Great accessibility. Y opening makes it easier to pack and retrieve what you need.4. Military durability. Scraped my backpack on the white walls. Took a damp microfiber towel and wiped the paint off. No issues.5. Water resistance. I haven't tested this yet. Reviews of water resistance are positive.6. Minimalist style.Improvements: 1. Larger sleeve to accomodate large water resevoir and 15 inch laptops.2. Update MR Packing cubes to be compressible such as the Nomatic Compression Packing Cubes.3. Make the pack more affordable. It can be an entry level pack for new customers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great daypack for European travel.I bought this smaller version of the Coulee 26 I already owned because I needed a smaller daypack for a trip to Europe. Like my Coulee 26, I comfortably carried 18-20 pounds with the hip belt removed. It was the perfect size for the many museums we visited—they have restrictions on the size of daypacks that can be carried inside. The full compartment zipper made it ideal for exposing the entire contents for the mandatory entry inspection of your pack’s contents. The two exterior sleeves and two water bottle holders were a handy plus. Naturally, this pack won’t go to waste. I plan to use this smaller pack for my shorter day hikes and keep using my Coulee 26 for longer ones. Once again, Mystery Ranch has delivered a quality pack.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Pack, except...This is my summer day hiking pack, Bridger 35 for winter day hiking pck.. Love the yoke and waist belt, perfect for 20-25 lb loads on long day hikes.Today was my third and most challenging hike so far with this pack. 8 km roundtrip with about 450 metres of elevation gain, half of it light bushwhacking. The not so good: I got a tear in the pack after brushing against a branch, ugh. I guess time for tape.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good, but...I have last year's version, which looks identical but was marketed as a 25L. Nice to see they have adjusted the rating as it was clear that 25L was far overstating the volume based on side-by-side comparison with other bags I have in the 20 and under size. Still, even for 20L, the water pouch reservoir is the smallest and hardest to insert a bladder - it's not the full width of the pack for some reason which makes putting in a 2L bladder a reach chore. I think even with that adjustment, this is a tight, tight pack for the stated volume - much easier to stuff a shell, vest, and your lunch in a similar 18L pack from Deuter that I have. For the volume, this is a seriously overbuilt pack, particularly with the stiffness and size of the shoulder and waist strap pads, but I know this is what MR is kind of known for. For me, that's a plus as I use one shoulder strap as an attachment point for a relatively heavy camera, so this helps distribute the weight. But at least for my anatomy, the curving of the straps isn't ideal and I have to cinch the sternum strap very tight to prevent those stiff straps - which want to fold out - from rubbing my shoulders on a long hike. As others have stated, the addition of a few small details like a clip for keys seem like an omission for a pack of this price range, comparing against others.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comfortable and compressibleGreat little pack, so far I've used it for EDC but will use it for dayhikes, as well. For EDC, I fit my laptop, papers, notebook, coffee and water bottles in the front pocket. I also packed a change of clothes for the gym and stuffed my climbing shoes in the side pockets where they stayed firmly in place and I had the lower compression straps for extra security. When I removed several items from the pack and compressed using all four compression straps, I was really pleased with how the pack evenly compressed and maintained a low-profile and close-to-back carry. Very adjustable and comfortable pack, durable materials, attention to detail. I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a day-hiking or outdoorsy-looking EDC pack.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Pack— Bigger Than it Looks!I bought this for alpine after developing a fondness for a friend’s Dana Design Big Sky. After getting some fit adjustment assistance from a very helpful CS rep, it fits so well it seems to disappear on my back, even with full rain gear, 1/2 gallon of water in two bottles (the rear vertical pockets fit quart Nalgene bottles perfectly), ample snacks, and an external phone battery stored in the belt pocket. I was concerned at unboxing that it would be too small for longer day hikes, but my concern turned out be completely unfounded. I love this pack.
