ASAP Great Day Pack/Camera Gear Bag
Being a fan of Dana Designs back in the day and owner of a Mystery Ranch 2014 Sweet Pea I got a ASAP from Bozeman in Sept. Used it hard in Yellowstone for several days and of course wasn't disappointed. Also, a user of Goruck packs and I must say the 3 way zip is superior to the calm shell opening in many ways.
Mystery Ranch ASAP is a quality piece of gear and their customer service is top notch. Perfect Day Pack and camera gear Bag. Can't go wrong with a Made in the USA Pack.
My Everyday Pack
I wanted one of these for many years and when my color of choice was re-released I finally pulled the trigger. This is a great sized pack for everyday use - I travel a lot and take it on every trip. It makes a handy carry-on or for just around town. Of course it is built like a tank and could probably carry 50 pounds if one could cram that much stuff into it. I took it on a sortie around Arches National Park and it worked as great in the backcountry as in the front country. It's got plenty of adaptability for add-ons with all the webbing and carry's extremely well. It's my 6th Dana Designs / Mystery Ranch Pack and probably won't be my last.
Buy Once Cry Once
I’ve been using this pack for day hikes, mountain biking, bow hunting Arizona and Alaska, air travel....you name it. It’s absolutely my go to pack for any minimalistic gear needs.
Yes, the pack costs quite a bit...but once cry once. This thing is tough, zippers, materials and USA Made tough.
This pack is amazing for any time of rough and active adventures. I've been running this pack through the gauntlet for the past year, and this little pack can handle just about anything. I have consistently taken this pack on day hikes(short overnight hikes even) in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
I have had this loaded with over 35lbs of heavy and bulky camera equipment and tripods. I have attached multiple external pouches using the PALS webbing on the interior and exterior of the pack, as well as attached lash points and straps to carry large tripods.
I purchased an aftermarket panel and accessories that allow me to completely reconfigure the internal load out of this bag in seconds. I have been trail running and fallen and scraped along rocks and trees, and my pack still looks fabulous.
When properly adjusted, this pack feels like it is a piece of armor, that is articulated and built just for you. Even when the pack is fully loaded, with external pouches and sleeping bags and equipment strapped to it, I could still run and move easily and hardly noticed the weight.
Some critiques of this bag are that there is a lack of internal organization/options. The twin water bladder pockets sewn into the main compartment hinder organization, rather than assist, unless you are carrying water bladders.
This pack is excellent for scrambling over jagged, sharp boulders and rocky terrain and day hikes. I would even recommend this pack for hunters who get out and stalk their prey.
I just got back from Afghanistan where I used this bag daily during dismounted patrols. Love the light weight and slick exterior. As with other MR bags, the tri-zip is great for accessing items in the bottom. This is the perfect size for carrying the standard assault pack items: extra ammo, frags, food, water, etc. Rides well with a plate carrier. I had no issues with the small waist strap, as I removed it anyways so it would not interfere with the rest of my kit. Overall, a well designed bag that worked well for me.
